Tool Storage

Organizing Those Tools

It doesn't matter if you are a household of woodworkers or a family of mechanics, if you're a single mom or if retired empty nesters that no longer do much handiwork, the truth is that everyone needs at least one tool storage box around the house, and likely more than one.

When we think of tools that need to be stored, generally we imagine a hammer, a couple of screw drivers, a saw, a drill, a set of socket wrenches, adjustable wrenches and maybe a saw -- electric or hand.

But the reality is there are many other kinds of tools that need to be in a handy location. There are kitchen tools, craft tools, an artist's tools, a writer's tools, even an office worker's tools, and … well, you get the idea.

Think of your house cleaning tools and supplies. Surely they need to be stored. What about specialized tools, such as those for car cleaning? If you have a workshop, do you have clean up tools there as well?

With so many different types of tools, it does not make sense to have every tool in your home located in one central location. The purpose of having tools is for them to be available when and where they are needed. And that is when having more than one tool storage box around is crucial.

Does it ever seem like the tool you need is always at the bottom of a pile of miscellaneous stuff? Do you have to pick up the spray bottles from the kitchen, the cleaning wands from the bathroom and the scrub brush from the laundry room to complete some of your cleaning tasks? Cleaning is enough of a chore without having to go on a quest to gather all your supplies.

Some tools you will use almost on a daily basis. Put related items together and store them in their own storage container. If you need to duplicate tools, pick them up at garage sales and thrift stores, so you don't need to break the bank or the family budget. For supplies needed in, say, multiple bathrooms, have a tote that has everything you need from sponges to cleansers to rubber gloves and any other little thing you might need to get the job done.

Traditional tools, including power tools need protection from moisture and rust. This is probably where garage tool storage solutions will help you. Your garage or basement are likely to be the biggest storage and tool centers in your home. Don't forget magnetic tool organizers and parts trays, and wrench racks. Then there's garden tool storage.

And let's not forget the kitchen! You'll need spice storage, knife storage, cooking utensil storage. And…well, you get the idea.

The type and dimensions of tools to be stored are important factors when selecting storage containers for style and size. You should also consider how organized and disciplined your household is. Make it easy on everyone. Tool storage should be brain dead simple so no one has an excuse for not putting things back where they belong.

Tool storage systems, totes and racks can go a long way to taming the tool clutter in your home. And with definite storage places for all your tools, there will be no more wondering where things are. If your goal is "A place for everything and everything in its place," chances are that place is a tool storage box.
